Pastor Jason: Culture of We-You-Bezalel

Exodus 35: 30-35 NIV Then Moses said to the Israelites, “See, the Lord has chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 31 and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills—32to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, 33 to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to engage in all kinds of artistic crafts. 34 And he has given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others. 35 He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers.

Exodus 25:8-9 NLT 8 “Have the people of Israel build me a holy sanctuary so I can live among them. You must build this Tabernacle and its furnishings exactly according to the pattern I will show you.

Exodus 25:40 NLT “Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.

1 Chron 28:12 NIV He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind for the courts of the temple of the LORD and all the surrounding rooms, for the treasuries of the temple of God and for the treasuries for the dedicated things.

1 Chron. 28:19 NIV “All this,” David said, “I have in writing as a result of the LORD’s hand on me, and he enabled me to understand all the details of the plan.”

Solomon 1 Kings 4:29 NIV God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.

Isaiah 11:1-2 NLT Out of the stump of David’s family[a] will grow a shoot—yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 3:16 NIV Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?

Ephesians 4:11-13 TPT 11 And he has appointed some with grace to be apostles, and some with grace to be prophets, and some with grace to be evangelists,[a] and some with grace to be pastors,[b] and some with grace to be teachers.[c] 12 And their calling is to nurture and prepare all the holy believers to do their own works of ministry, and as they do this they will enlarge and build up the body of Christ. 13 These grace ministries will function until we all attain oneness in the faith, until we all experience the fullness of what it means to know the Son of God,[d] and finally we become one perfect man[e] with the full dimensions of spiritual maturity and fully developed in the abundance of Christ.

Psalm 36:7 NIV How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

How can you go out this very week and apply something from this sermon?

What is the Holy Spirit saying to you through this Word today?

Last week we spoke about the culture of “WE”, specifically in relation to you. We all are called to our neighbors and nations. We desire that for all to engage in praying for, and adopting, a region of the world to pray for. Who are you praying for? Who is your group praying for?

This week:

  • You play a role of God’s story. You are ambassadors. We are representatives of His justice to the poor and the orphan. We are a picture of love to those who do not know Christ. We will be a picture of foolishness to some, and the smell of death to those who hate us for what we stand for.
  • Today’s message is more about honoring God with your design.
    • Especially in relation to creativity, as well as expression in work and life.
  • Work and church seem to be at odds at times.
    • Should the church be the most innovating and creative place on the planet?
    • What are some of your ideas of what that should look like or how do we get there?
  • God is an originator, He is the Creator. The enemy perverts and twists. The irony is that instead of the church engaging, solving and being an initiator in the world, we cede over responsibility.
  • Scripture: Exodus 35:30-35

1. Honor God every day in your God given design.

  • Sin separates us from God.
  • God desires to rescue, redeem and live with His people.
    • The Israelites were out of slavery, but still a slave to sin in their hearts.
  • God is holy and cannot come near sin, and you cannot appreciate Jesus without this.
    • God has to deal with people’s sin before He can live among them: His creation.
  • Perhaps God uses what you do to bring people closer to God.

Scripture: Exodus 25: 8-9-NLT, Exodus 25:40 NLT

A. Bezalel:

  • Filled with the Spirit of God- wisdom, understanding, knowledge and ability.
  • He is from the tribe of Judah, and he will build a moving sanctuary that God can inhabit to be near his people.
  • Creativity is the hallmark of God. Innovation and life are hallmarks of God.
    • Genesis 1:2 NIV- “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
  • God wanted to bring life, order, problem solving and creativity into the void.
    • Wherever there is a need and a void, God is waiting.

Martin Luther- “to tear down the wall of separation between the secular and sacred- there is bias on both sides- my job is no more spiritual than yours”

Work and worship- Genesis 2:5- till the ground- work, cultivate, till and worship.

  • God is waiting for us to step into the void as a church and as individuals. How do we do this?
  • When we go to our jobs to work and worship. Our work is holy to God, especially by honoring Him with our design.
  • God intentionally filled Bezalel with skill for His purposes, because He steps into the void/need.
  • Bezalel was reflecting the creative nature of God, and his part in the story of God.
  • His gifting comes from God by the Spirit of God.
  • Bezalel was:
    • An accomplished artisan.
    • He was metalworker.
    • Jeweler, gem-cutter and woodworker.

Has anyone been amazed at someone’s talent?

  • Quote about Bezalel: He represents the seamless merger between the cognitive and the intuitive. Between the contemplative and the pragmatic. Everything he creates is as if he were standing in “the shadow of the eternal.”
  • In the same way you have been equipped by God to do His work on the earth. Honor God with your design. What has God designed you to do?
  • I want to show you a pattern. God has patterns. You can trace His hand in patterns, but He will not be constrained by patterns.

B. God places it in the heart of David to build a temple for the Lord.

  • David is also from the tribe of Judah.
  • David desires that God inhabit a temple more glorious than anything ever seen.Scripture: 2 Samuel 7.

Scripture: 1 Chron. 28:12 NIV, 1 Chron. 28:19 NIV-David then passed the blueprints on to his son Solomon.

  • Solomon, 1 Kings 4:29 NIV, God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.

C. Jesus- of the tribe of Judah:

Scripture: Isaiah 11:1-2 NLT

Matt 16: Jesus builds the church- transition from physical to spiritual.

  • God desired to dwell among humanity.
  • David desired for the temple to be glorious.
    • Because of Jesus, God lives in a new temple, us the church and this is God’s idea of glorious.
    • 1 Corinthians 3:16 NIV

Ephesians 4- We build people:

  • We have transitioned from building man-made structures to being part of building people (the church). It does not mean we do not need the skill to build buildings. It just means that in Christ we use our gifts, talents, abilities, experiences and knowledge of God to serve those around us.
  • Ephesians 4:11-13 TPT
  • God’s glory will cover the earth through His church (people).
    • The church’s design is to equip people, and bring them into maturity in Jesus.
  • God wants to bring His life, His kingdom and creativity into the void in the world around you.
  • It is not just about you getting paid because you bring His kingdom, creativity and His life into your world.
    • The burden of Jesus was people. Love God, love people and release that dimension in every area of your life.

2. Honor God with your decision:

  • Filled with the Spirit of God- He remained near
  • “Bezalel”—in the shadow of God—is an emblematic way of describing someone who is enshrouded with the divine spirit. God’s Shadow is his Spirit.
  • Bezalel remained in the shadow of God. In the shadows means tutelage, training and protection.
  • Our success will be connected to our connection with God.
    • Success in God’s eyes is being conformed into Christ’s likeness.
    • Psalm 36:7 NIV- “How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.”
  • Theologians call these traits “anthropomorphisms”:
    • Human-scale representations that only hint at what God is like.
  • What casts a shadow over you? Something near and something bigger than you.

Top 3 desires according to researchers:

3. Purpose

2. Connection in community

1. Meaning

  • Our meaning comes from God
  • Luke 1:35 NKJV- “And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.”
  • How are we doing church? Maturity? Spending time with God? Reading the Bible?
  • I want you to honor God and take His kingdom into the void.
    • Knowing must precede going, because you have to establish the root to get the fruit.
    • What does this look like to you? Are you in a knowing phase or should you be in a going phase? How do you determine this?
  • Knowing God- being in the shadow of God, is the essence of the Christian life.
  • Life is busy, are you busy knowing God?
  • Identify your gifts and your creativity, and talk about how you can take it to the marketplace.
  • Turn off the distractions, because we can’t grow deep without spending time with Him.
